How much life insurance do you need?

A simple calculator plus the theory behind it: years of earnings replacement, current obligations, schooling and higher education, and your existing protections.

Add together all income your household depends on and remove amounts already protected. The calculation need not be exact; term policies are issued in $50,000 increments and the objective is an amount ensuring your household can continue through critical years.

Coverage estimate

$1,765,000

Coverage required = (annual income × years needed) + total debts + education costs − current insurance in place, rounded up to nearest $50,000. Use this as a reference, never as professional guidance.

Why those inputs

Income replacement duration. Ten to twenty years is the standard range recommended by professionals; pick based on how much time dependents will require financial support. Families in La Habra with young children tend to prefer longer terms since child-related costs (childcare, housing, tuition) coincide.

Outstanding obligations. For the majority of households, mortgage debt represents the single largest obligation. Setting coverage high enough to satisfy a mortgage enables loved ones to choose whether to remain in the home rather than being forced to sell by financial constraints.

Schooling costs. Include a rough estimate per child using current dollars. Factoring in education expenses now prevents the need to purchase extra coverage later.

Current insurance in place. Resources available to spend down or liquidate, or group life policies provided through employment. Because employer plans conclude when employment ends, many beneficiaries only credit a fraction of workplace coverage.

Once you determine your target figure, the quoting tool will display the monthly cost for that amount across 10 to 30 year durations from different insurance carriers. It is typical for purchasers to choose amounts slightly above their calculated needs since price increases at higher ages are often modest.
